With Christmas just over a week away it's tempting to check out of work, hit the pause button on our healthy lifestyle and tuck away our ambition and goals. We'll start fresh in the New Year, we tell ourselves as we reach for the last butter tart. That new project will wait until January, we say as we close down the computer. One last holiday before we decide whether we stay in an unhappy marriage or separate.
It's easy to get overwhelmed by projects and decisions that just seem too big, too unpleasant, too much work. But if you break down any major decision - separation, career change, lifestyle goal - they all have one thing in common: choice. For whenever we feel powerless or "stuck" - by circumstance, our past or the agenda of others - we need to remember that we are not. We have the choice to continue to be a victim or to stand up to whatever it is that is holding us hostage and say: Nope, no more.
You have the choice to make a decision that you know is bad for you or to reach out and ask for help. Pick up a mug of tea or a glass of wine? Hike an extra kilometre or turn back? Respond to an angry or accusatory email or not engage? Your choice. Most things in our lives are a reflection of a choice that we have made. If we want different results we have to make different choices.
Here's my challenge to you: Choose to start where you are even if you feel like you are lost. Every step you take will bring you closer to where you want to go. And don't wait until the new year. START NOW.
